Vision Statement



M2S celebrates the vitality, richness, and promise of superconductivity at the dawn of its second hundred years.  Although a century has passed since its discovery, superconductivity has lost none of its freshness or mystery.  The phenomena thrive on correlation and complexity, two hallmarks of the high temperature superconductivity era.  The established concepts of simultaneous pairing and phase coherence, electron-phonon mechanism, and quasiparticles described as Fermi liquids are challenged by pseudogaps that may indicate pairing without phase coherence, spin or charge fluctuation mechanisms that produce exotic anisotropic energy gaps, and many body states that cannot be described with one-electron theory.  Multiband phenomena and spontaneous electronic inhomogeneity are rich new phenomena, adding new dimensions to phase diagrams of competing magnetic, metallic, insulating and superconducting ground states, often with quantum critical points separating them.  Complexity and emergence arising from many interacting degrees of freedom provide an endless horizon of fundamentally new strongly correlated normal and superconducting behavior.

M2S will draw a diversity of scientists from the worldwide research community to consider the triumphs of the last three years and conceive the promising directions of the future.  The themes of the conference will reflect the new and emerging directions of the field, with emphasis on new materials, mechanisms and phenomena that elaborate the richness and diversity of strong correlation, competing phases, quantum critical points, multiband behavior, electronic inhomogeneity and exotic pairing in electronic and vortex matter.

The conference will feature tutorial lectures for students, postdocs and early career scientists capturing the promise and excitement of new research directions, a public lecture on the societal importance of superconductivity, status reports on the growing impact of applications, and overview talks for researchers on the latest advances.  Students and early career scientists will interact with senior researchers through various forums to promote informal discussion and networking.

To secure IUPAP sponsorship, the organizers have provided assurance that the International Conference on Materials and Mechanisms of Superconductivity (M2S 2012) will be conducted in accordance with IUPAP principles as stated in the IUPAP resolution passed by the General Assembly in 2008. In particular, no bona fide scientist will be excluded from participation on the grounds of national origin, nationality, or political considerations unrelated to science.
